Remove Internal Metal Door Frames

Use a sanding block or an orbital sander to strip the steel.

Remove internal metal door frames.

Sand with fine grit and finally extra fine grit sandpaper. Remove the screws from the frame with a power drill and appropriate bit. To remove a welded door frame the frame may not simply come off with a pull or pry. Lift the door out of the opening.

Pry it away from the opening carefully using the claw end of a hammer. Carefully lift the door off of the hinges and discard it. Remove the door from the frame by removing the screws from the hinges. Remove the hinge pins using a screwdriver.

Remove any trim or casing from around the frame. Remove the door from the frame. Pry off and remove each casing from the top and both sides of the jamb at both sides of the opening. Pull the jams off the wall by hand or pry them with a pry or crow bar if needed.
